Fall
Fall has a limited racing schedule with only two out-of-town varsity races. Freshman and novice practices are held after school. A parent cooperative carpool helps with transportation. Junior varsity and varsity practices are held in the early morning before school. The team practices together on Saturday morning.

Winter
Cold weather prevents getting on the water, so winter is a time of intense conditioning, including running, lifting and erging.

Spring
Practice for the whole team moves to the afternoons. Racing begins in March, and in April and May, most weekends are spent at racing events.

Travel for Races
Short-distance travel to races at Lake Arthur in Butler County and Dillon Lake near Zanesville, Ohio, for example, typically involve rowers traveling with crew parents in personal vehicles.  Longer-distance travel to Philadelphia, Cincinnati, Boston, etc. finds the boys riding in rented 12-passenger vans driven by parent-chaperones in informal convoys along with the team’s utility trailer and boat trailer.  Parents serving on the Central Crew Board plan and direct transportation, lodging, meals, and a full itinerary in cooperation with the coaches.  At distant race venues, large tents house cook stoves, food prep and serving tables, and sitting areas primarily for the oarsmen, coxswains, coaches and parents.

Races on the Allegheny River near the Millvale and Washington’s Landing boathouses are easily viewed on Herr’s Island, from both the riverside running trail and the Redfin Blues patio restaurant, where parents have typically been welcome to watch during off-peak times.
